Solution

Planets of the Solar System – Facts and Figures (Exhibition Chart)

Name of planet Distance from the Sun (million km) Diameter (km) Volume ($$\mathrm{km^3}$$) Number of satellites Special feature
Mercury 57.9 4,879 $$6.08 \times 10^{10}$$ 0 Closest and fastest moving planet
Venus 108.2 12,104 $$9.38 \times 10^{11}$$ 0 Brightest and hottest planet
Earth 149.6 12,742 $$1.08 \times 10^{12}$$ 1 The only planet having life
Mars 227.9 6,779 $$1.63 \times 10^{11}$$ 2 Red Planet, has 'Olympus Mons', the highest mountain in the solar system
Jupiter 778.5 1,39,820 $$1.43 \times 10^{15}$$ 64 Largest planet, called the 'Stormy Planet'
Saturn 1,432 1,16,460 $$8.27 \times 10^{14}$$ 33 Has prominent rings; very low density, so it would float in water
Uranus 2,871 50,724 $$6.83 \times 10^{13}$$ 27 Its axis is highly inclined, so it appears to roll along its orbit
Neptune 4,498 49,244 $$6.25 \times 10^{13}$$ 13 Winds blow at extremely high speed; one season lasts about 41 years

Points to remember while presenting

  • Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the inner planets. Their crust is hard.
  • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are the outer planets. They have a gaseous outer cover and rings around them.
  • Except Mercury and Venus, all planets have satellites.

Ideas for the exhibition

  • Make a big chart showing the planets in order from the Sun and paste their pictures.
  • Use balls of different sizes (like thermocol balls) to show the relative sizes of the planets.
  • Draw a scale on the chart to show the increasing distance of the planets from the Sun.
  • Give one interesting fact about each planet, as shown in the table above.
