  1. Pass a straight wire vertically through the centre of a horizontal cardboard sheet.
  2. Connect the wire to a battery through a key or switch.
  3. Sprinkle iron filings uniformly on the cardboard.
  4. Switch on the current and gently tap the cardboard.
  5. The iron filings arrange themselves in concentric circles around the wire.

These circular patterns represent the magnetic field lines around the current-carrying wire.

The direction of the magnetic field can be found using the right-hand thumb rule.
