Solution
Several factors have helped democracy endure in India:
- Constitutional institutions and the rule of law: Elections, legislatures, courts and other institutions provide established ways to exercise power and resolve disputes.
- Regular electoral competition: Voters can choose among parties and change governments through elections.
- Accommodation of diversity: Federalism, regional parties and coalition governments allow different regions and communities to participate in national politics.
- Political mobilisation and representation: The rise of OBC, Dalit and other political movements has brought previously under-represented groups into public life.
- Peaceful political negotiation: Parties with different views have often formed alliances and shared power.
Democracy in India has faced serious conflicts and challenges, but its institutions and citizens have continued to sustain and reshape it.
