Solution

Discovery of the Anti-Rabies Vaccine

By Louis Pasteur

Introduction:
Rabies was one of the most feared diseases of my time. As a child, I had seen people bitten by rabid animals suffer greatly. This painful memory inspired me to search for a cure. My aim was to understand the disease and develop a vaccine that could prevent death after infection.

Method:
Experiments were conducted on infected animals, particularly rabbits. Rabies material was introduced into their nervous system so that the progress of the disease could be studied. It was discovered that the virus was concentrated in the brain and spinal cord. Infected spinal cords were then removed and dried for different periods. Drying gradually weakened the virus. Preparations of increasing strength were made from these tissues.

Results:
Animals receiving the weakened virus developed resistance to rabies. In 1885, the treatment was given to Joseph Meister, a boy who had been severely bitten by a rabid dog. A series of injections containing progressively stronger preparations was administered. The boy did not develop rabies and survived.

Discussion:
The experiment proved that immunity could be developed by exposing the body gradually to weakened forms of the infectious agent. This discovery opened a new path in preventive medicine and saved many lives.

Conclusion:
The anti-rabies vaccine demonstrated the power of scientific observation, careful experimentation and perseverance in fighting deadly disease.
