Solution
Discontent among the Indian soldiers:
- The 1857 freedom struggle was sparked by growing dissatisfaction among Indian soldiers in the British army, along with political, social, religious, and economic grievances.
- Harsh treatment and strict limitations placed on Indian soldiers were significant causes of their frustration.
- The soldiers felt insulted for several reasons, the reduction in their allowances, being forced to cross the sea, daily humiliation during drills, unfair practices in transfers, and being overlooked for promotions.
- Immediate Cause: The immediate trigger for the 1857 War of Independence was the anger among soldiers. In 1856, the British introduced the Enfield rifle, which required new cartridges. Rumours circulated that cow and pig fat greased these cartridges. Due to their religious beliefs, the requirement to bite open the cartridges deeply offended both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. Forced to comply, the soldiers' refusal to use them intensified their resentment and sparked the revolt.
