Describe the role of roads in the economic development of India.

Roads serve as the lifeline of Indian trade. They connect the consumers with producers, connecting urban and rural centres. Rural centres produce agricultural goods, which they consume and transport to urban centres because they do not produce agricultural commodities. On the other hand, urban centres produce consumer products and supply them to rural areas. Most of India’s intranational trade is carried out by road. Since roads connect different areas, they boost trade by linking industrial areas with raw-material-producing areas and consumers with producers.

The government has categorised various road types, each headed by a different authority. The largest bulk of transportation and trade is carried out through national highways, which connect major cities, ports, and capitals. In addition to national highways, there are state highways, district roads, and village roads that connect smaller administrative units and facilitate micro-level economic activity. Although most of India’s international trade is carried out by air and sea, the construction of border roads has helped increase trade with neighbouring countries, thus providing an impetus to international trade.

Improved road connectivity has not only increased trade for major industries but also helped establish small- and medium-scale industries by providing them access to nearby markets. Footloose industries, which depend largely on roads, can prosper because of road development. Roads have helped connect the country’s interior to the main parts, thus expanding the economy. It was the development of roads that enabled the British to penetrate and exploit the country’s interior. Roads supplement the ports and airways. Ports and airports are major means of India’s international trade, but to connect the interiors to these ports and airports, a good road network is essential so that traded products can circulate within the country’s interiors. Therefore, roads play a pivotal role in connecting all other modes of transportation, as they are the only mode that provides door-to-door service.
