However, on this particular day, an unusual Sunday-morning stillness pervaded the atmosphere. Franz, arriving late and fearing a harsh reprimand, was anxious about entering the classroom where his peers were already seated. To his amazement, instead of scolding him, M. Hamel spoke with gentle kindness, inviting him to take his seat quickly.

Once settled, Franz noticed that M. Hamel was dressed in his formal attire, a green coat, frilled shirt, and embroidered silk cap, an outfit usually reserved for special ceremonies. Most surprisingly, the back benches were occupied by village elders, including old Hauser and former officials, all sitting silently alongside the students.
