Solution

Guy de Maupassant's short story "The Necklace" includes a character named Matilda. Matilda is a lovely and endearing young lady who longs to lead a life of luxury. Her pride in her charm and beauty, however, ultimately spells her doom. Matilda constantly longs for more and is dissatisfied with her modest lifestyle. She borrows a friend's diamond necklace to dress up when she is invited to a high society party. She receives admiration and praise for her beauty at the party, which only bolsters her ego and her conviction that she is deserving of a luxurious lifestyle.

Matilda discovers she lost the borrowed necklace after the party. Instead of accepting responsibility and dealing with the consequences, Matilda and her husband go to great lengths to replace the necklace, incurring significant debt in the process. Due to her arrogance and vanity, Matilda was oblivious to the consequences of her actions. She was so preoccupied with portraying herself as affluent and sophisticated that she was blind to the value of her own life and the joy it brought her. In the end, Matilda's obsession with outward appearances and her lack of gratitude for what she already had led to her demise.

Therefore, Matilda's pride in her attractiveness and charm ultimately contributed to her fall, as she made bad choices that had serious consequences.
