Solution

The connection between intelligence and creativity has been an important topic of study in psychology. Lewis Terman, a well-known psychologist for his work on intelligence testing, explored this relationship through a long-term study of highly intelligent children, popularly called “Terman’s Termites”.

His research showed that although these children had very high IQ scores, often above 140, and displayed strong academic and intellectual skills, they did not all become highly creative or original thinkers in later life. Many grew up to be successful, productive, and well-adjusted individuals, but only a small number made exceptional contributions in creative or artistic fields. This finding clearly suggested that high intelligence alone does not guarantee creativity.

Terman’s study highlighted that intelligence and creativity, though related, are separate abilities. Intelligence, particularly IQ, mainly reflects convergent thinking, which focuses on finding one correct answer. Creativity, however, involves divergent thinking the ability to generate many new and original ideas. While a basic level of intelligence, around an IQ of 120, may be necessary for creativity, additional traits such as imagination, openness, risk-taking, and inner motivation are essential for creative expression.
