Solution

The most important features of state and society in India before 1000 CE were the development of organised kingdoms and empires, diverse social groups, and systems of administration. In the early period, communities were organised around families, clans and tribes, which gradually developed into janapadas, mahājanapadas and larger kingdoms. The king played an important role in protecting people, maintaining justice and governing the state, with the help of ministers and officials. Society had different social, occupational and religious groups, and agriculture, crafts and trade were important to the economy. Ideas such as dharma and the chakravarti samrāṭ also encouraged common values and the idea of political unity. Overall, India before 1000 CE was marked by political development, social diversity, cultural interaction and growing administrative organisation.
