Solution

In Scene 1, the armies of Brutus and Cassius confront Antony and Octavius. Harsh words are exchanged before the battle. Cassius becomes superstitious and fears defeat, while Brutus prepares himself for the possibility of death. Their farewell suggests that they may never meet again.

In Scene 2, Brutus wrongly believes that Octavius’ forces are weak and orders an early attack. This hasty decision becomes a serious military mistake.

In Scene 3, Cassius’ forces are defeated. Because of a misunderstanding, Cassius believes that Titinius has been captured and orders Pindarus to kill him. Titinius later returns safely, finds Cassius dead and kills himself in grief. Brutus mourns Cassius as ‘the last of all the Romans’.

In Scene 4, the defeat of Brutus’ side becomes clearer. Young Cato is killed, while Lucilius pretends to be Brutus in order to protect him. Antony is impressed by Lucilius’ loyalty and spares his life.

In Scene 5, Brutus realises that defeat is certain. After his companions refuse to kill him, Strato holds the sword while Brutus runs upon it. Antony then pays tribute to Brutus as ‘the noblest Roman of them all’, and Octavius orders an honourable burial.
