  1. The most electronegative element is fluorine, which only exists in the −1 oxidation state as opposed to other halogens, which can also exist in the +1, +3, +5, and +7 states.
  2. This is because it cannot excite its ns or np electron pairs in the absence of unoccupied orbitals.
  3. It also has a relatively small atomic size. As a result, it only forms one oxoacid, HOF, and cannot exist as a core atom in higher oxoacids of the types HOXO, HOXO2, and HOXO3.
  4. The O.S. of fluorine in this addition is −1.
