Solution

We have,

A rectangular container with base 8 cm by 5 cm contains some water. When a cube of edge 4 cm is placed in it, the water rises in the container.

Let the water rises in the container be h cm

Now we know that,

Volume of the cube is Edge2

Then, the volume of the cube is 43 = 64 cm3

Volume of a cuboid = (Length) × (Breadth) × (Height)

Then, volume of the water inside the rectangular container = 5 × 8 × h

Now, volume of the water inside the rectangular container = Volume of the cube

5 × 8 × h = 64

`h = 8/5`

h = 1.6 cm

Therefore, the rise in water level is 1.6 cm.
