Review: Components of a newspaper report

Headline: Every report has a headline to attract the attention of the reader, state the topic of the news in a strong, short phrase, or statement. The headline must be

  1. catchy
  2. brief-leave out articles, prepositions, etc. and where possible, use abbreviations/shortened word-forms

Byline: Since this is your report, let the reader know who wrote it. The line with your name on it is called the ‘Byline’. Write the word ‘By’ followed by your first and last name. On the next line, write the name of your school and city.

Lead Paragraph (Para 1): Answers the questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why?
Remember to write about the following points:

  • name/names of the person/s or thing/s that the news is about;
  • the place where the incident took place;
  • the day, date, and time of the day when it took place;
  • the details of the incident;
  • the reasons why it happened.

Paragraph 2: Informs the reader about details of the incident. Narrate the incident in chronological order.

Paragraph 3: Eyewitness accounts add to the authenticity. Also, they may interest the reader. Include some quotes from the eyewitnesses' comments. Also describe what they felt about the incident.

Paragraph 4: The future course of action being planned.

Note: Remember to use simple, clear but formal language.

Robot ‘i Talk’ Impresses at Press Conference

New Delhi, 28 September 2026: A young innovator, Arjun, introduced his robot ‘i Talk’ at a press conference held in the city. The robot has been designed to interact with people and assist them through spoken communication.

Arjun explained that i Talk can understand simple commands, respond to questions and perform basic tasks. He developed the robot after months of research, programming and testing.

Those present at the press conference appreciated Arjun’s creativity and technical skill. One visitor said, “It is amazing to see such an intelligent robot created by a young student.”

Arjun now plans to improve i Talk further by adding more features and making it useful in schools, homes and public places.
