Solution

Statement: For any place lying to the west of another place, the local time decreases by 4 minutes for every 1° of longitude. Since São Paulo lies to the west of India, its local time is behind India’s local time.

Difference in longitude (as taken in the textbook) = 127°30′.

Difference in local time

= 127.5° × 4 minutes

= 510 minutes

= 510 ÷ 60

= 8 hours 30 minutes.

Therefore, if it is 6:00 a.m. IST in India, the local time at São Paulo will be:

6:00 a.m. − 8 hours 30 minutes = 9:30 p.m. (previous day).

The local time at São Paulo would be 9:30 p.m. on the previous day.
