Solution

Given: A bag has 5 white, 7 red, 4 black and 2 blue balls. One ball is drawn at random.

Step-wise calculation:

1. Total number of balls

= 5 + 7 + 4 + 2

= 18

2. “Neither white nor black” means red or blue.

Number of favorable outcomes

= 7 + 2

= 9

3. Probability = `"Favorable outcomes"/"Total outcomes"`

= `9/18`

= `1/2`

The probability that the ball drawn is neither white nor black is `1/2`.
