Question

10 g of ice at 0°C is added to 10 g of water at 80°C, such that the temperature of the mixture is 0°C. Calculate the sp. latent heat of ice. [S.H.C. of water = 4.2 Jg−1°C−1]

Solution

Heat lost by water = 10 × 4.2 × (80 − 0) = 3360 J

Heat gained by ice in melting = 10 L J

Heat gained = Heat lost

10 L = 3360

L = \[\frac{3360}{10}\]

L = 336 Jg−1
