उत्तर

(i) When the natural frequency of vibration becomes equal to the frequency with which the object is vibrating, the object will have maximum amplitude. This is called resonant vibration.
(ii) Timber or quality of sound.

What are mechanical waves?

What are forced vibrations?

In following figure shows two tuning forks A and B of the same frequency mounted on two separate sound boxes with their open ends facing each other. The fork A is set into vibration.

  1. Describe your observation.
  2. State the principle illustrated by this experiment.

A tuning fork of frequency 256 Hz will resonate with another tuning fork of frequency:

Give two examples of forced vibrations.

A rifle shot is fired in a valley between two parallel walls. The echo from one wall is heard in 3 s and the echo from the other wall is heard 3 s later. If the velocity of sound at 00c is 330 ms-1 and the temperature in the valley is 100c, calculate the width of the valley. For every 10c rise in temperature, the velocity of sound increase by 0.61 ms-1.

On keeping the stem of a vibrating tuning fork on the surface of a table, a loud sound is heard. Give reason.

The diagram below shows three different modes of vibration P, Q and R of the same string of a given length.

P Q R
  1. Which vibration will produce a louder sound and why?
  2. Which vibration will produce sound of maximum shrillness (or pitch) and why?
  3. What is the ratio of wavelength of vibrations P and R?

A bucket kept under a running tap is getting filled with water. A person sitting at a distance is able to get an idea when the bucket is about to be filled.
(i) What change takes place in the sound to give this idea?
(ii) What causes the change in the sound?

When acoustic resonance takes place, a loud sound is heard. Why does this happen? Explain.
