Explain Why are stringed musical instruments provided with large sound boxes?

The larger soundbox contains a large amount of trapped air. When the vibrations of the vibrating string are impressed upon the air, it starts vibrating with forced vibrations. As a large volume of enclosed air vibrates, a loud sound is produced.
