A watershed, or water divide is a ridge which separates the tributaries draining towards one side of it from those drawing towards the other. A watershed is never half way up a slope and on the two sides of it, the slope must be opposite and downwards.

A watershed, also known as a drainage basin, is a geologically defined area of land in which all precipitation and surface runoff flow into a single, shared water body such as a river, lake, or reservoir. Its limits are natural topographic ridges or hilltops that serve as a hydrological split, separating one basin from another. All water movements in this area are interrelated, making it the most important geographic unit for environmental planning. Modern conservation strategies place a strong emphasis on watershed management, which includes rainwater harvesting, soil erosion control, and groundwater recharge to restore ecological balance, prevent local flash floods, and ensure long-term water security for the communities that live within that drainage zone.
