Sprinkler irrigation is a modern method for distributing water to crops in a way that reflects natural rainfall. Water is distributed through a network of pipes, pumped at high pressure, and sprayed into the air by nozzles or sprinklers to form little water droplets that fall equally across the fields. This highly controlled micro-irrigation system has a water-use efficiency of up to 75-80%, significantly decreasing waste from surface runoff and deep soil seepage when compared to typical furrow systems. It is especially useful in sandy or uneven terrains where land leveling is difficult, as well as for crops with close spacing, such as cereals, legumes, and vegetables.
