The chemical used to dissolve SO3 is concentrated sulphuric acid. The product formed is the oleum or pyrosulphuric acid.

Main reactions of the process are:

\[\ce{S + O2 -> SO2}\]

\[\ce{4FeS2 + 11O2 -> 2Fe2O3 + 8SO2}\]

\[\ce{2SO2 + O2 <=>[V2O5][450^\circ C] 2SO3}\]

\[\ce{SO3 + H2SO4 -> H2S2O7}\]
