Bipolar disorder also is known as ‘Manic Depression’ is expressed through serious shifts in mood energy, thinking, and behavior. The term ‘bipolar’ refers to the presence of two extreme types or poles of mood with mania on one pole to depression, melancholy or sadness on other poles.

Symptoms:
  • Decreased need for sleep, extremely active, high level of energy.
  • Irrationally optimistic and highly talkative than usual.
  • A lack of touch with reality, delusions, etc.

Bipolar disorder is characterised by two types of episodes: manic and depressed, as well as mixed episodes (which combine aspects of both).

  1. Manic Episode Symptoms (High phase):
    • Excessive energy and restlessness
    • Abnormally elevated or irritable mood

    • Reduced need for sleep
    • Rapid speech or racing thoughts
    • Impulsiveness or poor judgment (e.g., spending sprees)
    • Risky behavior (e.g., unsafe sex, reckless driving)
  2.  Depressive Episode Symptoms (Low phase):
    • Persistent sadness or low mood
    • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
    • Fatigue or low energy
    • Sleep disturbances (too much or too little)
    • Changes in appetite or weight
    • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
