A brass ball is hanging from a stiff cotton thread. Draw a neat labeled diagram showing the forces acting on the brass ball and cotton thread

Thrust is the ............ force acting on a surface.

Match the column

Column A  Column B
(a) Camel (1) broad and deep foundation
(b) Truck  (2) broad feet
(c) Knife (3) six or eight tyres
(d) High building (4) sharp cutting edge
(e) Thrust (5) atm
(f) Moment of force  (6) N
(g) Atmospheric pressure  (7) N m

State two effects of a force when applied on a body.

In Fig. a force F is applied in a direction passing through the pivoted point O of the body. Will the body rotate? Give reason to support your answer.

State one way to reduce the moment of given force about a given axis of rotation.

The diagram shows two forces F1 = 5 N and F2 = 3N acting at point A and B of a rod pivoted at a point O, such that OA = 2m and OB = 4m

Calculate:

  1. Moment of force F1 about O
  2. Moment of force F2 about O
  3. Total moment of the two forces about O.

Fig.  shows a uniform meter scale weighing 100 N pivoted at its centre. Two weights of 500 N and 300 N are hung from the ruler as shown in fig.

(i)    Calculate total clockwise and anticlockwise moments.
(ii)    Calculate difference in clockwise moment and anticlockwise moment.
(iii)    Calculate the distance from O where a 100 N weight should be suspended to balance the meter scale.

The diagram shows a uniform metre rule weighing 100gf, pivoted at its centre O. Two weights 150gf and 250gf hang from the point A and B respectively of the metre rule such that OA = 40 cm and OB = 20 cm. Calculate :

the difference of anticlockwise and clockwise moment

What is meant by the term ‘moment of force’? If the moment of force is assigned a negative sign then will the turning tendency of the force be clockwise or anti-clockwise?
