Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan
(12 March 1913-25 November 1984)
was born in the village of Devrashtre in Satara District of Maharashtra. Popularly known as Saheb, he was from  a poor agriculture Maratha Family. From a very humble beginning he rose to meteoric heights. He was the First Chief Minister of Maharashtra and thereafter occupied the high poisitions of Defense Minister, Home Minister, Finance Minister, Foregin Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India.

Yashwantraoji Chavan was responsible for many developmental intiatives in Maharashtra. The laws regrading Democratic Decentralizeed Bodies - Village Panchayats, his regime as Chief Minister. His vision of Agro - Industries with an emphasis on Co-operative Sector and regionally balanced Industrial Development of Maharashtra resulted in putteing the state in the fore front of the nation. His contribution to the field of education in the from of putting enormous educational centers in Maharashtra and providing a free education to economically backward classes (EBC), made it possible for generations of common man to see the light of knowledge.
