Pune Vidyarthi Griha is a century old reputed and established institution with tall aims and objectives. Pune Vidyarthi Griha was established on 12 May 1909. The school entered its centennial year on 12 May 2008.
This hundred years journey is a saga of hardship, pursuit, devotion, dedication and determination of its founders since its inception.
The pioneering efforts were taken by Divan Bahadur Kashinath Ramchandra Godbole, a noted engineer and a socialist at Pune. He had a great concern for the poor, needy and deserving orphans of the society. He had a strong desire to support them and educate them. This cannot be done single-handedly but with the co-operation and contribution from the helpful and generous people of the society.
So he published a pamphlet appealing the people to donate not only for the education of these students but also for their shelter, so their financial help is used systematically and constructively. This article made a tremendous impact on the society. Being inspired by this thought noted personalities like shri.Shri Sitarampant Godbole, Shri. Annasaheb Gadre, Shri. Ramchandra Janardan Patwardhan and Shri. Narayan Gajanan alias Balukaka kanitkar came together to start with and took an initiative to offer education with an accommodation and boarding to the five needy and poor students. The institution started with a very small beginning in the ’Bhat Wada’ near Cimnya Ganpati at Sadashiv Peth Pune. And Pune Vidyarthi Griha came into being.
Considering the increase in the number of students, in the year 1912, the arrangement was made for a stay of the students at Nagnath Park, in the palatial house owned by Shri Balukaka Kanetkar.
Later the institution had the honour of having the first “Kulguru”Vishnu Gangadhar alias Dadasaheb Ketkar associated with it. He dedicated his entire life with the single minded objective of developing the institution.
During this period the agitation against the British Government had become severe and many students from the Government schools had jumped into the freedom struggle. Balukaka Kanitkar felt that the students from PVG should also join this movement forgoing school. Shri Dadasaheb Ketkar opposed this thinking. According to him it was like being distrustful with the parents, by letting their children join politics instead of learning ;a foundation for the child’s future life. As a result of this dispute Balukaka Kanitkar looked after the school at Chinchwad and Dadasaheb Ketkar made Pune his work place for life. Annasaheb Khair and Nanasaheb Parulekar joined Dadasaheb Ketkar at Pune in 1921 the trio established Maharashtra Vidyalaya , the first innovative school in Maharashtra.
These pioneers of the institution were looking for new avenues whereby the students could become and build a good character. This task was accomplished very successfully in this institution. Anath Vidyarthi Griha had started with a humble beginning but within a short span it became a vibrant institution gaining popularity. On the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee the institution was renamed as Pune Vidyarthi Griha
On 17th May 1926 the institution opened its branch at Nashik and also took over Lok Sngraha Printing Press, for the institutions independent printing and thereby provide employment to its students. On 8th December 1938 the institution owned Ghorpade Baug property donated by Shri Babasaheb Ghorpade from Ichalkaranji. On 6th December 1938 the institution got registered.Further PVG established the college of engineering and other educational projects and continued its convention of dispensing technical expertise and value bases education.
Under the able leadership of its dexterous team of honourable president , directors and secretaries an infrastructure congenial for the spread of education is set up. Efforts are made to achieve remarkable standards of education by keeping pace with the rapidly changing times. When the whole world is changing into a global village it has become imperative to provide high standards of education. In order to achieve this objective , good classrooms equipped with laboratories and an equally competent staff is made available. Now 3000 staff members and 17000 students is the asset of the institution.
PVG has always given priority to satisfying the educational needs of the poor and deserving students but it has adapted itself to the changing times. On one hand the institution is fulfilling its social obligation to provide free education to poor and needy and on the other hand it is spending lakhs on salaries of teachers , hostel facility and infrastructure with the latest and the best facilities.
