Question

Write the symbolic representation of the electrochemical cell with the cell reaction.

\[\ce{Zn_{(s)} + 2Ag{^+_{(aq)}} -> Zn{^{2+}_{(aq)}} + 2Ag_{(s)}}\]

Indicate the oxidation electrode and the direction of movement of electrons and write the electrode reactions.

Solution

Symbolic representation of the electrochemical cell is:

\[\ce{Zn_{(s)} | Zn{^{2+}_{(aq)}} || Ag{^+_{(aq)}} | Ag_{(s)}}\]

The left-hand side of this cell representation is the oxidation electrode, and the right-hand side of this cell representation is the reduction electrode.

The direction of movement of electrons will be from anode to cathode.

Oxidation electrode reaction:

\[\ce{Zn -> Zn^2+ + 2e-}\]

Reduction electrode reaction:

\[\ce{2Ag+ + 2e- -> 2Ag}\]
