It oxidises potassium iodide to potassium iodate.

\[\ce{2KMnO4 + H2O -> 2MnO2 + 2KOH + 3O}\]

\[\ce{KI + 3O -> KIO3}\]

\[\ce{\overline{2\text{KMnO}_4 + \text{KI} + \text{H}_2\text{O} \leftarrow 2\text{MnP}_2 + 2\text{KOH} + \text{KIO}_3}}\]

or,

\[\ce{2MnO^-_4 + H2O + I- -> 2MnO2 + 2OH- + IO^-_3}\]
