Solution

Write the chemical equation for the reactions involved in the extraction of copper from copper pyrites.

Roasting: Copper pyrites is roasted in excess air, converting sulphides into oxides.

\[\ce{2CuFeS2 + O2 -> Cu2S + 2FeS + SO2 \uparrow}\]

Partial roasting of iron sulphide:

\[\ce{2FeS + 3O2 -> 2FeO + 2SO2 \uparrow}\]

Partial roasting of iron sulphide:

\[\ce{FeO + SiO2 -> FeSiO3_{(slag)}}\]

Self-reduction (Auto-reduction): Molten copper(I) sulphide reacts with iron(II) sulphide to give blister copper:

\[\ce{Cu2S + 2Cu2O -> 6Cu + SiO2 \uparrow}\]
