During field studies, the investigator has to decide whether the survey will be conducted in the form of a census for the entire population or will be based on the selected sample. If the study area is not very large but composed of diverse elements then the entire population should be surveyed. In the case of a large size area, one can limit the study to selected samples representing all segments of the population.
