Short Answer

Solution

When nitric acid is treated with gold, nothing happens, as gold is a noble metal and does not react with nitric acid alone. Gold dissolves only in aqua regia, a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, forming chloroauric acid. Nitric acid by itself cannot dissolve gold.
