  1. Rivers deposit sediment as they move from higher to lower course.
  2. The upper reaches of river valleys have coarse soils. Soil particles are big and not uniform. These soils are common in piedmont plains. These soils can be found up to 500 metres deep.
  3. It is light and porous, therefore easily tillable.
  4. It is a fertile soil rich in minerals, especially potash and lime.
  5. Soils in the drier areas are more alkaline.
