Question

The ratio of the number of turns in the primary to the secondary of an ideal transformer is 1 : 5. If 5 kW power at 200 V is supplied to the primary, find

  1. current in the primary, and
  2. output voltage.

Solution

Given: `N_p/N_s = 1/5`

P = 5 kW = 5000 W

Vp = 200 V

i. Primary current (P) = VpIp

⇒ Ip = `P/V_p`

= `5000/200`

= 25 A

ii. Output voltage:

`V_s/V_p = N_s/N_p`

Vs = `(N_s/N_p) V_p`

= 5 × 200

= 1000 V
