The edge length of the unit cell of a body-centred cubic (bcc) crystal is 352 pm. Calculate the radius of the atom.

Solution

Given: a = 352 pm   

For bcc crystal,

`sqrt (3) a = 4r`

∴ `sqrt (3) xx 352 = 4 xx r`

`r = sqrt (3) xx 352/4`

= 1.732 × 88 pm

= 152.4 pm
