The two responses:

1. The first response in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was restorative in nature. Both tribal uprising and peasant rebellion made an attempt to restore the older order.
2. The second response appeared in the second half of the nineteenth century in the form of Indian nationalism that progressively imagined India as a nation emphasising a consciousness of unity, and national aspiration.
