On strong heating, the light amorphous white solid changes to pale yellow.

\[\ce{ZnCO3 ->[\Delta] ZnO + CO2}\]

Lime water acquires a milky appearance due to the release of a colourless, odourless gas. When too much gas passes, the milkiness goes away. The gas that evolved is carbon dioxide.
