K3[Fe(CN)6]

Calculate the oxidation number of Fe in K3[Fe(CN)6].

Solution

Let the oxidation number of iron (Fe) be x.

Hence, 3 × (+1) + x + 6 × (−1) = 0

(+3) + x + (−6) = 0

3 + x − 6 = 0

x − 3 = 0

∴ x = +3
