Question

Sodium is stored under kerosene. Give reason.

Solution

1. Sodium is one of the most reactive metals.

2. Sodium reacts with oxygen in the air, at room temperature, to form sodium oxide.

         \[\ce{4Na + O2 -> 2Na2O}\]

3. Sodium reacts with water vapour but not with kerosene.

4. Sodium sinks in kerosene due to this it does not come in contact with air.

Hence, to prevent sodium from burning, it is stored in kerosene.
