Solution
35000
Explanation:
Promised votes for x = 40% = `2/5`
⇒ Promised votes for y = 60% = `3/5`
Let total voters be 100a
⇒ Promised votes for x = 40a
⇒ Promised votes for y = 60a
On the voting day `1/4` went back on their promise to vote for x and 15% of the voters went back on their promise to vote for y.
⇒ x got = `40a xx 1/4` = 10a less votes, which polled in favour of y
⇒ y got = `60a xx 15/100` = 9a less votes, which polled in favour of x
⇒ x got = 40a – 10a + 9a = 39a votes
⇒ y got = 60a – 9a + 10a = 61a votes
y won by 7700 votes
⇒ y's votes – x's votes = 7700
⇒ 22a = 7700
∴ Total voters = `7700/22 xx 100` = 35000
