Solution
The phenomenon of adsorption is used in the softening of hard water by employing ion exchange resins or adsorbents like zeolites. Hard water contains hardness-producing ions such as Ca2+ and Mg2+. When hard water passes through these resins or zeolites, these adsorbents selectively adsorb and remove Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions from the solution, replacing them with sodium ions or other non-hardness ions. This selective adsorption of hardness ions reduces the water’s hardness, making it soft. The process is based on the principle that the adsorbent’s surface has a greater affinity for the hardness ions, thereby effectively softening the water.
