Solution

  1. Electrode potential comes into existence when a metal electrode is dipped into a solution of its own ions, causing a transfer of electrons between the metal and the ions.
  2. If metal atoms lose electrons and enter the solution as ions, the electrode becomes negatively charged.
  3. If metal ions from the solution gain electrons and deposit on the metal, the electrode becomes positively charged.
  4. This transfer of charged species at the interface creates a potential difference between the metal and the solution, known as electrode potential.
