Question

Give reasons for the following :

Aquatic animals are more comfortable in the cold water than in warm water.

Solution

According to Henry's law,

Mole fraction ( χ) of a gas in the solution is proportional to the partial pressure (p) of the gas in the solution

p = KH χ ...... where, KH is called Henry's law constant.

It is observed that higher the value of KH at a particular temperature, the lower is the solubility of the gas in the liquid. If temperature increase,  KH increases and solubility of gas oxygen decreases. Hence, aquatic species are more comfortable in cold water compared to warm water.
