Solution

Deserts are formed in different latitudes due to various geographical reasons. In tropical regions between 15° to 30° north and south latitudes, deserts develop mainly because of high-pressure belts where dry air descends, preventing cloud formation and rainfall. These areas often lie on the western margins of continents and are influenced by dry trade winds and cold ocean currents, which reduce humidity and precipitation. Examples include the Sahara Desert and the Atacama Desert.

In polar regions, deserts form due to extremely low temperatures that limit evaporation and moisture in the air, resulting in very little precipitation. These cold deserts are characterized by dry, frozen landscapes.

Additionally, deserts can also form in rain shadow areas, where mountains block the moist winds, causing heavy rainfall on the windward side and leaving the leeward side dry. An example is the Thar Desert, which lies in the rain shadow of the Aravalli Hills.

Thus, deserts arise due to descending dry air in high-pressure zones, cold ocean currents, low precipitation in polar areas, and rain shadow effects caused by mountain ranges.
