Question
Explain why only all-glass apparatus should be used for the preparation of nitric acid by heating concentrated sulphuric acid and potassium nitrate.

Solution
The glass apparatus is purposely used because the nitric acid produced reacts with practically every material, including cork and rubber. Glass is the lone exception. Nitric acid in its pure form is unstable when exposed to sunlight.
