Solution
Ionic compounds are generally crystalline solids at room temperature, as they are arranged in a very organised 3D structure called a crystal lattice. Because ionic compounds are formed by the transfer of electrons, they consist of positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions). These ions are held together by very strong electrostatic forces of attraction.
