Question

Calculate the mass of the solute in the following solution:

100 cm3 of `N/10` KOH

Numerical

Solution

Given: Volume of solution = 100 cm3 = 0.1 L

Normality (N) = `N/10` = 0.1 N

Molar mass of KOH = 56 g/mol

KOH is a monobasic base (1 OH per molecule), so

Normality = Molarity

Mass of solute = Normality × Equivalent weight × Volume (L)

For KOH, equivalent weight = molar mass = 56 g (since n = 1)

Mass = 0.1 × 56 × 0.1

Mass = 0.56
