(a) (1) The electronic configuration of a d4 high-spin octahedral complex is `t_(2g)^3 e_g^1`.

(2) The electronic configuration of a d6 low-spin octahedral complex is `t_(2g)^6 e_g^0`.

(b) (1) CFSE = (3 × −0.4 Δo) + (1 × 0.6 Δo)

= −1.2 Δo + 0.6 Δo

= −0.6 Δo

(2) CFSE = (6 × −0.4 Δo) + (0 × 0.6 Δo)

= −2.4 Δo + 0 Δo

= −2.4 Δo
