उत्तर
Due to constant use, there is space for the play of screw gauge but gradually this space increases with the use or wear and tear so that when the screw is moved by rotating it in some direction, it slips in the nut and does not cover any linear distance for some rotation of the screw head. The error due to this is known as backlash error.
It is avoided by turning the screw always in the same direction.

What do you mean by zero error of a screw gauge? How is it accounted for?
When a screw gauge with a least count of 0.01 mm is used to measure the diameter of a wire, the reading on the sleeve is found to be 1 mm and the reading on the thimble is found to be 27 divisions.
(i) What is the diameter of the wire in cm?
(ii) If the zero error is +0.005 cm, what is the correct diameter?
State the formula for determining a pitch
The circular scale of a screw gauge has 100 divisions. Its spindle moves forward by 2.5 mm when given five complete turns. Calculate
- pitch
- least count of the screw gauge
Name the measuring employed to measure the diameter of a pencil.
Consider the following case where the zero of vernier scale and the zero of the main scale are clearly seen. If L.C. of the vernier calipers is 0.01 cm, write the zero error and zero correction of the following.
