उत्तर

If the zero of the circular scale lies above the line of graduation then it is called negative zero error. When there is a negative zero error, then the instrument reads less than the actual reading. Therefore in order to get the correct reading, the zero error should always be added to the observed reading.

Which of the following measures a small length to high accuracy : metre rule , vernier callipers or screw gauge?

In the vernier callipers, there are 10 divisions on the vernier scale and 1 cm on the main scale is divided into 10 parts. While measuring the length, the zero of the vernier lies just ahead of the 1.8 cm mark and the 4th division of vernier coincides with a main scale division.

(a) Find the length.

(b) If zero error of vernier callipers is -0.02 cm,

What is the correct length ?

A micrometre screw gauge has a positive zero error of 7 divisions, such that its main scale is marked in 1/2 mm and the circular scale has 100 divisions. The spindle of the screw advances by 1 division complete rotation.
If this screw gauge reading is 9 divisions on the main scale and 67 divisions on the circular scale for the diameter of a thin wire, calculate

  1. Pitch
  2. L.C.
  3. Observed diameter
  4. Corrected diameter

What do you understand by the following term as applied to micrometre screw gauge?

Baseline

What do you mean by the term pitch of a screw gauge?

Name the two scales of a screw gauge.

State whether the following statement is true or false by writing T/F against it.

The diameter of a wire can be measured more accurately by using vernier calipers than by a screw gauge.

What is the least count in the case of the following instrument?

Spring balance

'Each measuring instrument has a limit of accuracy'. Comment on the statement.

What is meant by the pitch of a screw gauge? The pitch of a screw is 1 mm.
