Explain the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka.

1. After Sri Lanka became independent, the people who ran the government were mostly those who advocated the interests of the Sinhalese majority. They didn’t like that a lot of Tamils had moved from India to Sri Lanka and lived there.
2. Militant nationalism grew because Tamil issues were ignored. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a terrorist group, began attacking the Sri Lankan Army with weapons in 1983 and wanted “Tamil Eelam,” which means a separate country for Tamils and Sinhalese.
